Since 1 May 2025, it is official: the term “Community design” has been replaced by the simplified term “Union design”. This mirrors the “Community trademark”, which was renamed “European Union trademark” nine years ago.
The following additional changes entered into force on 1 May 2025:
1. The “Ⓓ” is here!
Similar to the well-known Ⓡ for registered trademarks, there is now the Ⓓ for registered designs. Like a trademark, this sign can be used to indicate protection as a warning to potential imitators and may also be understood as a promotional indication.
2. More flexibility for multiple applications
The requirement for class uniformity has been abolished. Designs in different Locarno classes may now be filed together in one single application. Under the newly introduced limit, a maximum of 50 designs may be filed in a multiple application.
3. Deferred publication made easier
The payment of a publication fee is no longer required.
4. New renewal deadlines and fees
• Renewal deadlines will now run exactly from the filing date.
• The fee structure has been adjusted – with partly lower, partly more targeted fee levels.
