Protecting your brand in the United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates’ accession further strengthen the Madrid System’s status as a key component of protecting marks globally, offering a convenient and cost-effective solution for brand owners

On September 28, 2021, the Government of the United Arab Emirates deposited with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) its instrument of accession to the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks (“the Madrid Protocol”). 

The Madrid Protocol will enter into force with respect to the United Arab Emirates on December 28, 2021.

Only from that day on international trademarks can be filed designating the UAE or a subsequent designation of IR trademarks for the UAE can be made. The government of the UAE has stated that they whish to charge an individual fee. The exact amount cannot be determined at this point of time.

With the accession of the United Arab Emirates to the Madrid Protocol, the number of Contracting Parties of this treaty and members of the Madrid Union is now 109.
