Iraq joins the PCT Agreement    (country code IQ)

On 31 January 2022, Iraq has declared its accession to the PCT Agreement.
Its membership will enter into force on 30 April 2022.

20 years after the end of the Iraq war, this marks a further normalization of the country. With its accession, Iraq becomes the 155th contracting state to the PCT (Patent Co-operation Treaty).

The PCT treaty provides a cost effective way to internationally file patent applications. This enables applicants to consider within an extended period of time in which member states of the PCT Agreement a patent should be filed. These longer periods provided for reflection are often important to better assess the commercial aspects of an innovation and to better estimate whether the costs and expenses associated with filing a patent application in one or more countries are justified.
